Watiya Tjuta
1/2

DEBRA MCDONALD NANGALA

This story was passed on to Debra by her well known mother in law, Mitjili Napurrula whom she spent many years painting beside. Debra is now the sole custodian of this dreaming - meaning she is the only person who is allowed to paint it. This painting incorporates significant elements referring to Uwalki country – Mitjili’s homeland around Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff) west of Alice Springs in Central Australia. The motifs in this painting depict the leaves of the watiya tjuta (mulga trees). The wood from these trees was used to hand carve spears, artefacts and ceremonial objects associated with spear straightening ceremonies and other men’s ceremonies.
