Knight Fine Art

About

Established in 1991 (originally as Knights Indigenous Art), Knight Fine Art is a multifaceted Indigenous art business with over 30 years of experience in operating galleries, representing artists, and curating exhibitions both in Australia and internationally.

Our long-standing relationships with many of Australia’s most recognisable Indigenous artistic families—often spanning multiple generations—are a testament to our commitment to cultural integrity and respectful collaboration.

Knight Fine Art is dedicated to promoting ethical, transparent, and sustainable practices within the Indigenous art industry. We proudly support both Aboriginal-owned art centres and independent artists, ensuring that all works are sourced responsibly and with cultural sensitivity.

Our extensive stockroom reflects the extraordinary diversity and depth of Indigenous artistic expression. The collection includes highly collectible paintings and artefacts, as well as contemporary works, sculptures, and limited-edition prints.

We proudly serve a broad clientele, from first-time buyers and seasoned collectors to corporate clients, interior designers, and architects—each seeking meaningful, authentic, and enduring works of art.

1970's

1970's

Adam Knight was born in Broadford, Victoria, and raised as an only child in a remote farming community, independent of the main electricity grid. His early life was shaped by a unique environment—his father cared for tigers, camels, donkeys, water buffalo, emus.

Adam Knight served for many years as the national Sales Manager for the Cherbourg Aboriginal Community in Queensland. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the distribution and sales of a diverse range of products, including live emus, emu-derived products such as emu oil and cosmetics, as well as Aboriginal paintings, artworks, and handcrafted items. These goods were supplied to Australiana retailers across Australia and exported internationally.

1993

1993

Knight's career developed more seriously in the arts when he met Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri in and became fascinated by the work and stories of the Indigenous Australian art community.

1994

1994

At the age of 22, Adam Knight went on a formative tour of the Kimberley region with Judy Daly, a representative of the Aboriginal Economic Development Office in Perth. During this journey, he visited numerous remote communities and met several artists who would later achieve national and international acclaim, including Queenie McKenzie Nakarra, Jack Britten, Shirley Purdie, and Rover Thomas Joolama. These early encounters played a pivotal role in shaping his deep appreciation for Aboriginal art and laid the foundation for his future career in the industry.

Knight’s commitment to expanding the visibility of Indigenous artists continued in 2008 when he commissioned Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, daughter of renowned artist Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, to create a large-scale installation for Jamie Durie’s exhibit at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in London. The collaboration earned Durie the Gold Medal, presented by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In recognition of the contribution, the Queen was gifted an original work by Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, which now hangs in the Royal Collection alongside a work by her father.

In 2018 Knight curated "Beyond the Veil" at the same gallery, an exhibition of metaphysical dot paintings created by Aboriginal women, from May to July 2018. Some artists in the show, such as Emily Kame Kngwarreye, were over 70 when their work was created. In the wake of Damien Hirst being accused of plagiarising Aboriginal artists in his show "The Veil Paintings", which showed at the Gagosian in Beverly Hills earlier that year, the show gained a lot of publicity and was a critical success.
