SARRITA KING

Sarrita King, a Gurindji, Waanyi woman, has been combining the rich traditional culture and methods of indigenous artists with contemporary attitudes and new techniques seeing her develop a new style of indigenous art. She has strived to remain faithful to the old whilst embracing the new, demonstrating that indigenous art is not just about what has been, but about highlighting the here, the now and the future. Collaborating with Ballarat born Tegan Hamilton they together continue this journey with a relationship between their cultures. While Sarrita was a young girl she regularly travelled the Stuart Highway by car with her father, the late, William King Jungala. The highlight of the trip would always be seeing the Wedged Tailed Eagle, always looking forward to seeing them in abundance as they slowly ascended Australia. The birds would gorge and fly into the car to take flight - scary and thrilling to see. Sarrita often reflects on the fact that she would see less and less of these magnificent birds over the years due to the cane toads spreading across the country. However they are starting to repopulate now after a time of adapting to the toads. It is a reminder of nature’s resilience and the perseverance of an animal in its prime. The Wedged Tailed Eagle is truly a master predator. On heavy linen, Sarrita and Tegan use acrylic paints to create this piece. They utilise technology to communicate and mock up ideas, but complete their own painting separately, responding to one another with the painting in front of them. This work juxtaposes the repetitive nature of the land with the majestic wedge tailed eagle. Sarrita as a Gurindji woman has a deep connection to the Warlawurru (wedge tailed eagle) and Tegan with her rural Australian upbringing feels close to the native flora and fauna that surrounded her through childhood. Ngurra, meaning country in Gurindji Language, is presented as the earth cracking in the desert or bright intensity of lightning over the land. In this repetition there is a calling to the land and its simple intricate beauty.
