MAUREEN HUDSON NAMPITJINPA

Sandhills are a dominating feature of the landscape in many parts of desert country in central Australia. They cover vast areas of land, rippling across the land in parallel waves of sand, formed, shaped and transformed by the winds. Sandhills can be between 3 and 7 metres in height, so visually it can be impossible to see what its beyond the next sandhill. Amongst the maze of sandhills, valleys form between the crests. The amount of water run off and the fertility of the soils create micro-climates in the valleys between the sandhills. They can vary between the extremes of being dry and barren to having abundant patches of bush tucker and rock holes and soakages that have dependable sources of underground water. Survival in this harsh terrain depends on intimate knowledge of a clan’s ancestral lands; knowledge gained by the timeless tradition of ancestors walking on country, teaching younger generations the places to find life giving bush tucker and water soakages. Finding and returning to these life sustaining sources of food and water is only possible with deep knowledge of country, and the seasons yielding various berries, seeds, nuts and other bush tucker. Maureen’s Sandhills paintings pay homage to country, honouring her spiritual, ancestral and physical connection to the land.
