Lisa Khan was born in 1987 and is from Coober Pedy. She speaks Yankunytjatjara/Antakirinja. Her artwork is inspired by her Grandmother’s Country—her grandmother was born at Mount Barry near Coober Pedy—and her Grandfather’s Country, Wallintina Station, where he was born.
Lisa paints the parente tjukurpa, an important story from her grandfather’s Country about the parente lizard that stole the grinding stone. She also enjoys painting scenes from her hometown, Coober Pedy.
Growing up, Lisa and her family would search for opal and play in the sand. Her grandmother taught them how to hunt lizards, particularly the ankata (bearded dragon), which they would prepare and cook on the fire. They also gathered bush tucker and various bush fruits.
When she paints, Lisa feels deeply connected to her Country and to her grandparents, who have passed away. Through her paintings, she shares her stories and traditions, passing them on to her son, as well as her nephews and nieces.
