Born to a Warlipiri father and Warlmanpa mother, Aileen Napaljarri Long was raised in Willowra Community and moved to Tennant Creek in her youth. She began painting as a young woman, but ceased for many years before picking up the brush again with Barkly Regional Arts (Tartukula Artists).
Aileen applies thick layers of acrylic to render electric abstractions of bush tucker, in particular wanakiji (bush tomato) and nunjawarri (bush potato); both of which grow in abundance after big rain. Dexterous use of vivid hues overlaid with grid-like positioning of dots combine to present these captivating and compelling renditions of ancient narratives.
'This is wanakiji, bush tomatoes. Our family collects bush tucker with a crowbar. We dig them up. We learn from our elders, from our parents. We grew up on bush food, kanga berry, bush potato. I paint bush tuckers because I like to go out and collect them, sit out with the crowbar and dig the potato and eat them, its great tasting food!'
