THOMAS TJAPALTJARRI

Tingari - Tingari Cycle refers to the Dreamings (Tjukurrpa) and associated Laws of the Pintupi language group of the Western Desert of Central Australia. Tingari are the the Dreamtime ancestors of the Creation Era. These ancestral beings travelled vast areas of the Western Desert, stopping to perform ceremonies at specific sites to create all flora, fauna and geographic features of the Pintupi lands. These sacred Creation stories form the law, societal structures and rituals that govern traditional Pintupi life. They explain how to survive the harsh desert environment and the natural world through story, song and rituals. Tingari stories are also represented by strong abstract designs and markings painted on the body for ceremony, on shields, and in ground paintings for teaching. Tingari sites include Wilkinkarra, Marawa, Tarkurrnga, Njami and Yarrawangu, located within the Gibson Desert. Sacred teachings have been passed down through ancient song cycles by Pintupi elders to younger generations as they progress through the initiations. The gradual stages of initiation into the sacred knowledge became a life long journey, ensuring the cultural and ceremonial obligations are maintained through the generations. The sites are more than a geographic feature or location, they embody spiritual and societal laws for the Pintupi people. Tingari Law is considered sacred and secret. This knowledge is only for the men initialed into the Laws. No further sharing of the deeper teachings of Tingari Law is available.
