WENTJA NAPALTJARRI

Wentja Napaltjarri was born at Malparinga, and grew up west of Kintore in her father’s country, located in the Gibson Desert on the Western Australia/ Northern Territory border. Wentja is the daughter of one of the founders of the Desert painting movement, Shorty Langkata. Wentja Napaltjarri had three sisters who are also well known artists - Wentja No 1, Tjunkiya, and Linda Syddick. Wentja has always painted the subjects that relate to her Pintupi culture, and her paintings representing her Father’s country are topographical maps of the country that also include references to significant metaphysical narratives of the Pintupi traditional life. This work depicts a Women’s site near an important Rockhole, close to Tjukurla. The roundel’s represent the rockholes as well as ceremonial sites. The lines in the centre represent sandhills. This site was an important one for Wentja’s father, Shorty Lungkata, who was a very prominent senior Papunya artist.
