Prolific bark painter George Milpurrurru was born in the Northern Territory in 1934 and died in 1998. He was a member of the clan Gurrumba Gurrumba from Central Arnhem Land, near Ramangining and a member of the Ganalbuingu language group. Milpurrurru established and maintained his own outstation some miles from the town centre where he lived in a bush environment, hunting and providing for his wife and children. He was also an important leader in his community’s secular life. His work covered a wide range of subjects including the Dreamings of his clan, the Gurrumba Gurrumba, and themes concerned with mortuary rites, hunting and gathering expeditions and the ancestral figures of his people.
