Dulcie Pula Long belongs to the third generation of a family that has shaped the course of Australian art. Born in 1986 at Boundary Bore Outstation in the Utopia homelands, she is an Anmatyerre woman and the daughter of the late Jeannie Petyarre, and grew up in the company of Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Gloria and Kathleen Petyarre, Greeny Purvis Petyarre and the Pwerle sisters, sitting alongside them as they worked and absorbing colour, story and technique by osmosis. Her right to the Bush Medicine Leaf carries an unusually clear line of transmission: the design was originated by her mother Jeannie and indigenous aunty Gloria Petyarre. Dulcie continues it with her mother's authority behind her. Working with a fine round brush loaded with one or two colours at once, she lays down each leaf as a single brief stroke, building the canvas in stages and sweeping from the outer edges toward the centre, so that the whole surface turns and drifts like foliage caught in wind. The leaves themselves are those of the Atnwelarr, or pencil yam. a trailing desert herb that erupts across the ground after rain and signals to the women where the tubers lie beneath. Collected and boiled to draw out a resin, then bound with kangaroo fat, they yield a paste used to treat cuts, burns, bites and rashes. In painting them, Dulcie pays homage to the spirit of the plant and encourages its regeneration, so that its healing power endures for the generations that follow.
