ROSEMARY PITJARA (PETYARRE)
Rosemary typically paints Bush Medicine, Bush Yam and body paintings, stories and dreamings that have been passed to her down the ancestral line of her father's family. Rosemary is familiar with, and deeply connected to the land, and its abundance of bush tucker, plant medicines and native fauna. Her paintings represent her connection to the land and its stories, as she paints with a flowing rhythmic style invoking a sense of movement. Rosemary typically uses a vibrant colour palette that Utopian artists are renowned for around the world .
The women of Utopia (Anmatyerre region) walk on country, carefully selecting leaves to be used for bush medicine. The leaves are boiled to extract a resin which is mixed with kangaroo fat to form a paste that can be a stored in the bush for extended periods. This medicine is used to heal burns, cuts, bites and rashes as well as an insect repellant.
Women continue to perform traditional Bush Medicine Awyele (ceremony) at different times of the year. They paint their bodies with special markings specific to the ceremony and their seniority on the community. Led by the most senior women in the clan, women sing and dance, paying homage to the land, their traditional stories and dreaming.
