Rosemary Pitjara (Petyarre) paints Bush Medicine Leaf, Bush Yam and Awelye (women's ceremonial body paint) designs, subjects drawn from the women's stories she has inherited and from a lifetime's intimate knowledge of her Country and its bush foods, medicine plants and native fauna. She developed her Bush Medicine Leaf design along with her sister Jeannie Pitjara (dec) and her cousin, the celebrated Gloria Petyarre (dec.), who made the motif internationally known, and Rosemary has since made it her own: leaves caught mid-flight, capturing the movement, depth and rhythm of the foliage as it dries and lifts in the wind. Her flowing, rhythmic line is a direct legacy of the batik years at Utopia, where she was among the first group of Anmatyerre women at the forefront of the art movement, and she works in the vibrant palette for which Utopia painting is recognised worldwide. Some ties she applies small dots around the leaves which represent the seeds. Bush Medicine, The Anmatyerre and Alyawarr women of the Utopia homelands walk on Country, carefully selecting leaves for bush medicine. The leaves are boiled to extract a resin, which is mixed with kangaroo fat to form a paste that can be stored in bush conditions for up to six months. The medicine is used to treat burns, cuts, bites and rashes, and as an insect repellent.
